Introduction
Mumbwa – December 5, 2025. Zambia’s copper sector is entering a transformative phase. According to PricewaterhouseCoopers PwC’s 2025 Mining Industry Review Report, the nation is on track to achieve 960,000 metric tonnes of copper production in 2025, a significant leap from the 746,679 tonnes recorded by October 2025. This trajectory underscores Zambia’s ambition to reclaim its position as a global copper powerhouse, with long-term targets set at 3 million tonnes annually by 2031.

PwC’s Perspective
Presenting the report in Lusaka, PwC Country Senior Partner Andrew Chibuye, highlighted Zambia’s mid-year performance and long-term potential:
“By mid-year, Zambia had already produced 439,644 tonnes of copper, representing a 17.8 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024. We then look at the road to three million tonnes, which takes us back to the discussion on production. Where are we now? The country’s current copper mining potential stands at 1.96 million tonnes annually.”
Chibuye emphasized that reviving dormant mines, expanding energy supply, and improving transparency in licensing are critical steps to unlocking Zambia’s full production capacity. by this link

Musonda reiterated government commitment to achieving the 3 million tonnes by 2031 target, stressing that policy reforms and stakeholder collaboration will be essential to sustaining growth.
Economic and Global Impact
Copper remains the backbone of Zambia’s economy, contributing significantly to GDP, tax revenues, and foreign exchange earnings. With global demand for copper surging—driven by electric vehicles, renewable energy infrastructure, and digital technologies—Zambia’s expansion positions it as a critical supplier in the green economy.
