The Director General of the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), Mr. Albert Halwampa, has expressed satisfaction with the progress made at the Sinomine Kitumba Copper Mine Project during a familiarisation visit to the site in Mumbwa District. Mr. Halwampa, who led a delegation of senior Government officials, toured the mine facilities, held discussions with management, and inspected ongoing works. The visit formed part of ZDA’s continued engagement with strategic investments aimed at driving Zambia’s economic growth and industrial expansion.

Project Development

During the inspection, Mr. Halwampa noted significant progress in the construction of mining infrastructure and supporting facilities. He commended the advancement of open-pit mining activities and preparatory works for mineral processing, describing them as a clear demonstration of the investor’s commitment to meeting development timelines. He further highlighted that the project aligns with the government’s agenda to promote mineral beneficiation and value addition, stressing that downstream processing will enhance Zambia’s earnings from its mineral resources. Mr. Halwampa also welcomed Sinomine’s plans to integrate renewable energy solutions, particularly solar power, as part of efforts to promote environmentally sustainable mining operations.

Government Support

Reaffirming the government’s backing for the project, the ZDA Director General underscored the role of ZDA and other state institutions in facilitating investment processes and ensuring a stable operating environment. He emphasized that the mine is expected to generate employment, contribute to skills development, and stimulate economic activity in Mumbwa District and beyond.

Community Development

The delegation was briefed on Sinomine’s community development initiatives, including water supply projects and local employment opportunities. Mr. Halwampa stressed that such interventions reflect the government’s expectations for investors to uplift host communities actively.

Welcome Remarks by Sinomine CEO

Welcoming the delegation, Sinomine Kitumba Mine Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Wang Zhiwei, expressed gratitude to ZDA for its support and guidance since the project’s inception. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Zambia’s economic development, noting that the Kitumba Mine represents a significant investment in copper production, job creation, skills transfer, and responsible operations in line with national laws and environmental standards.

Mr. Wang emphasized that Government support, particularly through ZDA, has been instrumental in advancing the project, adding that Sinomine remains committed to partnering with the Government to achieve Zambia’s broader industrialization and growth objectives.

Voices from the Mine

Mine Captain, Mr. Moffat Kabali, praised the dedication of the workforce, noting that the construction of infrastructure and advancement of open-pit activities reflect discipline and safety. “We are building not just a mine, but a future for hundreds of Zambians,” he said.

Deputy Mine Manager, Mr. Mwiinga Chifwepa, highlighted the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility programmes, including water supply initiatives and local employment. He stressed that mining must go hand in hand with community development, pledging that Sinomine Kitumba will remain a model of sustainable and inclusive investment in Zambia.
