Mumbwa Zambia – In a landmark gesture of Corporate Social Responsibility CSR, Sinomine Kitumba Minerals has officially handed over a newly constructed market shelter, borehole, and toilets to Chief Kaindu community in Mumbwa District. The event, held on November 3, 2025, drew local leaders, government representatives, and community members to celebrate the infrastructure that promises to transform local commerce and livelihoods. This is the second social development project as Sinomine Kitumba is also rehabilitating a 52-kilometre stretch of D181 Road from Mumbwa Town to its mine site in Kaindu.

A Symbol of Partnership and Progress

The market shelter, strategically located to serve traders from surrounding villages, was built to enhance economic activity and provide a safe, dignified space for trade. The structure includes reinforced roofing, borehole and sanitation facilities—designed to cater for the community’s needs for a suitable trading place.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mumbwa Town Council Chairman Charlie Masumo praised Sinomine Kitumba’s commitment to social development when the mining has not even started production.

Mr Masumo said, “Your commitment to social responsibility, as demonstrated through this infrastructure, reflects a deep understanding of the role mining companies must play in the holistic development of host communities. This aligns very well with the new dawn government under the able leadership of president Hakainde Hichilema’s development agenda.”

The civic leader added that the market will greatly promote commerce and empower the community in Mumbwa District. “This shelter will provide protection from the elements, enhance sanitation, and foster a more organized trading environment. it will empower our traders—especially women and youth—who are the backbone of our informal sector.”

Government Endorsement and Community Impact

Representing Mumbwa District Commissioner Namukulo Hayumbu at the event, labour officer Aaron Mfune emphasized the government’s support for private-sector-led development:

“Today marks a significant milestone in our collective journey toward sustainable development, dignity, and empowerment.

The infrastructure we are receiving today will uplift lives, stimulate local trade, and improve public health. This is what partnership for progress looks like.”

He added, “I urge the community to take full ownership of these facilities. Let us protect them, maintain them, and use them wisely. Development is not a gift — it is a shared duty.”

The market is expected to serve several traders and indirectly benefit thousands through improved access to goods, services, and income-generating opportunities.
